Never Say Never? How Open Is Southwest Airlines To Another Merger?

During a shareholder meeting on May 15th, Southwest Airlines' leadership team was quick to express its opinions on the carrier's immediate position regarding mergers and acquisitions. While the carrier indicated that it had no plans to merge with or purchase another airline in the near future, it did indicate that it would quote-unquote "never say never" to the possibility of yet another such expansion.

They should probably work on upgrading their ancient computer systems first.

First, the obvious potential candidates would be Frontier or Spirit, and both utilize Airbus.

Second, given recent DoJ opposition to the JetBlue/Spirit merger and Northeast Alliance, it's unlikely Southwest acquiring another airline would get Federal approval.

Who would they merge with??? Most smaller airlines (other than Alaska) have all airbus fleets.

If they do merge with anyone, their name will carry over no doubt.

Southwest would probably be most compatible with JetBlue or breeze, the DOJ wouldn’t allow them to buy out spirit or frontier especially what happened with JetBlue and spirit, but possibly would allow JetBlue or Breeze, since they all have similar prices and routes and generally the same philosophy
