I made this Rotkohl recipe and served up with latkas, apple sauce, sour cream, kielbasa, and a Stella Atrois tonight. I thought I could now die happy ... except that I want to eat it again tomorrow. That was out of this world good!!! Grateful thanks for sharing!

Hi, I made rotkohl for the first time this past Thanksgiving. I wanted to make a traditional side dish for a German friend of the family (we live in the USA). I’m Latina and know nothing of German food but I was looking for an authentic recipe. I tried your recipe and followed it to the letter. Well, my friend said it was just like her mom’s and the best she has had since she left Germany. So thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thank you for sharing. I am an American from a Midwestern family with significant German ancestry and this has always been a favorite of mine since I was a very little boy.

I lived in germany for eight years in the 80's and this was one of the finest things I remember eating, especially with some single cream drizzled over for extra indulgence. I enjoyed it with sauerbratten und kartoffeln! shoenen

I’m making this tomorrow for my mother’s 70th birthday. I chose your recipe specifically as I had watched it two years ago when my stepdad was still alive, to make it for him. Sadly, never got the chance. He loved this. Was in the Air Force for 20 years and lived in Europe for a long time. I know she’ll love it tomorrow! Thank you!

I find Barbara's voice alone totally alluring. And she is a fine-looking lady, who makes excellent food.

Love this recipe. My Great Grandmother is German and having personally lived in the Eifel region for several years it one of my favorite. Don't be afraid to vary this to taste or use something up in your fridge. I added three small chopped beets to use them up and they fit right in. 😆 Thank you

I had a go at making this substituting a few ingredients. I used white vinegar in place of wine vinegar and and a pinch of ground cinammon then added a splash of my own home brewed mead. I was amazing, best cabbage recipe I have ever made. Even with some cheap sausages and mashed potato it made the dish gourmet. Thankyou so much.

You remind me to make this amazing side dish more often through the year. It is sweet and savory, and complements roasts and poultry both. My German relative immigrants to Missouri and Kansas must have eaten a similar dish, but even if they did not, I was glad to discover red cabbage many years ago, to serve with Sauerbraten, and Roast Duckling.

Thanks for that! Braised red cabbage is the smell of Christmas for me! We have always had it with the Christmas goose and turkey! My Dad’s family were from East Prussia so ours is a little different, the acid comes from lemon juice, there isn’t any black current or cinnamon but the main herb is marjoram.
