BOOKS TO LEARN INTERPRETING*:

Recently, conference interpreters at the European Parliament voted in favour of a strike action to protest against the current RSI (Remote Simultaneous Interpreting) work conditions. Many are worried about the future of the profession, since interpreting remotely via Zoom, Interprefy, Webex and other online tools is perceived by many to be not only a major downgrade when compared to onsite events, but also a cause for concern regarding our health due to the increased levels of stress and cognitive overload.

This begs the question: is conference interpreting an endangered profession? Is Work From Home (WFH) deteriorating our work conditions and ruining our livelihoods as interpreters, both freelancers and in-house?

These are my views on the matter and what transformations I foresee in the interpreting market.

I'm considering studying conference interpreting as soon as I graduate high school, and the idea of working from home seems better to me. I guess It would be more stressful and exhausting for me to go after work to my hotel, have a flight and so on.
