For those who don't know the Altay is a modern main battle tank (MBT) developed by Turkey. It is designed to replace older tanks in the Turkish Armed Forces and enhance Turkey’s indigenous defense capabilities.

Key Features of the Altay MBT

1. General Specifications

Weight: ~65 tons

Length: ~10.3 meters (with gun forward)

Width: ~3.9 meters

Height: ~2.8 meters


2. Firepower

Main Gun: 120mm L/55 smoothbore gun, capable of firing NATO-standard rounds

Ammunition Capacity: ~40 rounds

Secondary Armament:

7.62mm coaxial machine gun

12.7mm remote-controlled turret

Engine: The first batches used a 1, 500 hp MTU diesel engine (Germany), but later versions feature Turkey’s indigenous Batu V12 engine (1, 500 hp)

Armor: Composite armor (developed by Turkey’s Roketsan)

Active Protection System (APS): Planned integration of Aselsan’s Akkor APS for defense against incoming projectiles

Fire Control: Modern fire control system with hunter-killer capability
