I hope Nikon brings out a Z8 with the EN-EL 15 series battery, but like the D850, have an option for a grip taking the EN-EL 18, possibly giving more fps (though I don't really care about that). I am happy with my Z7, but if I have to make wishes for the Z8 I just want the best autofocusing camera, with twin XQD/CF Express slots. Built in GPS would be nice. I really don't care how many megapixels it has, as long as it's 24 or more.

Specs for Z8 - hopefully not more than 61MP - for event type work that is already too big and most would be using the Medium RAW option which at that high a MP count would likely still be in the 30-40MP range which is still arguably big - 24MP for events is really a nice sweet spot. For the portrait and fashion work I do 61MP is still more than enough - certainly plenty. For those that will use this camera in DX for wild life etc - there would still be almost 27MP if the full frame was 61MP - that should be enough.

Frame rates: I think this matters a little less for this camera as the Z9 will be the master of this, but anything 12FPS and up is probably fine - I think around 14-16 would be awesome - especially as that is as good as anything that Nikon has to date - I.e. D6 14 FPS. Also, in listening to most professional sports photographers, they indicate that around 16 FPS is all you ever need and that anything more is just marketing. I think the exact quote from one was "if you can't nail it with 16 FPS, then the problem is you and not the camera" - or something like that. In any case, for a non-dedicated action camera like a Z8 (an all-arounder) 14-16 would be a lot. The bigger point here is that there needs to be no (or very little) rolling shutter - so we need this camera to have a stacked CMOS sensor like the Z9.

Video - should have 8k obviously - hopefully up to 60FPS - more importantly for this camera would be high quality 4k with options up to 120 FPS. They should eliminate recording time limits and allow recording of video to both card slots.

The most important thing this camera (and the Z9) can do for Nikon is put the AF issues to rest once and for all. I've been shooting with my Z6ii now for a few months and I will admit that the AF (eye detect) is much improved from where it was on the Z6. Now, it is so good that it is completely usable for portrait sessions, events and the like. As far as general subject tracking for action goes, although better than it's predecessor, it is still not to the level of the competition and the Z9 and Z8 need to be as good as anything on the market.

It would be great if the Z8 could have 2 CF Express cards (Type B) and not the hybrid of 1 CF Express and 1 SD - if there are room constraints due to size, then take a page from Sony and have the second card slot be a CF Express type A slot so that SD can be used but a faster option is available so the slot can come closer to keeping up with slot 1 (CF Express Type B).

The EVF should be state of the art - in both resolution and refresh rate - of course with Nikon's awesome optics in front of it to make it even cleaner and more life like.

The back screen needs to be high resolution (at least as good as the Z6/7 but more would be better). The screen need not be a vari-angle screen that flips forward as I don't think this is really a vloggers camera - although the Z6iii whenever it comes out definitely should have a flip forward screen. That said, the Z8 screen should tilt to allow for vertical (portrait) oriented shots to be taken close to the ground without having to lie down - similar to the screen that Fuji uses in some of their models - so it tilts for both low angle horizontal as well as vertical shots. I think a screen like this would be perfect for the Z8 - as long as the flip forward screen is on future Z6's as the Z6 is supposed to be the powerhouse Nikon Video camera. That said, I also think all the entry level camera from Nikon going forward should have the flip forward screen - like the rumored Z 30 and future Z 50's as well as any Z 5ii - the lower end market is the market where most vloggers will sit.

Finally - a base ISO as low as can go for the Z8 would be awesome - obviously no lower than 64 as that is the base for the D850, but it would be great to see it even lower if possible. For outdoor portraiture in broad daylight shooting with OCF and at maximum apertures ISO 100 just isn't low enough, and 64 although better is not enough lower - especially when shooting at 1.4 or 1.2. To fix this we need lower ISO - 32 or lower - again the lower the better, and perhaps a faster shutter speed - like 16000th of a second or higher - although if HSS cannot sync to these fast speeds that would defeat the purpose - global shutter would solve this problem but I don't think we are there yet - dare to dream.

Just my thoughts.

Good one Matt! The hilarious thing about this vid is given the rate of current development, all but the last announcement was believable. 😂. As for the Z8, my wish list (though I am LOVING my Z7II) is as follows: 50 to 100 megapixel (pixel shift would be nice, but not essential) 4k video with 120p. 8k seems impractical as there are limited display options. Built-in Dolby Vision. This is an excellent color space. Lighted buttons. Low light (night) EVF for night shots - even if refresh is diminished - this would be a tripod use case regardless. Pro-style eyepiece. Form factor as close to the Z6/Z7 as possible. This is extremely important. We shouldn’t lose sight of the importance of the mirrorless portability advantage. Battery should be EN-EL15 series to maintain consistency for D850/D500 users. Optional vertical grip, not permanent. AF mode button same as the higher DSLRS and Z9. Game changer would be to equip it with the “MX” 100mp sensor (compatible with S-line lenses) but of course compatible with all Z lenses auto-cropping as necessary. Oh - one more random thing for you - I have bought and tested the MEKE extension tubes available from B&H. Excellent on the 24-200 and downright astonishing on the 50mm f1.8.

I believed you until you started talking about the GoPro haha! We’ll probably get A7RV and Z8 soon enough, though

Another great analysis... but I've never understood mixing cards. Why not two CF or two SD instead of one of each ?!

Thank you for this, Matt! It's so important to have something to laugh about these days. As for the Z 8, I don't really know what I want from it. As it's the D850 successor, it will probably have high resolution. And I would prefer the EN-EL15c battery and smaller size of the body, that's for sure.

Texted my mate with the Nikon specs as I was watching. Got to the ‘reveal’ and had to give him the bad news.
We both cried.

When the Z8 finally does go on sale, I reckon it's going to be out of my price range.
As well as being too high a spec for my needs. So eventually I expect I'll be looking at
the Z7ii again. I am Nikon through and through.

To help out those watching who may not know... the only value of greater and greater numbers of pixels is IF you need to make physical prints of enormous size at 300 dpi or greater, or you have an (unusual) need to crop tightly into a file and still have high res. The actual QUALITY of the still image is no better captured with an 11 megapixel than with a 60 megapixel. As far as video, 4k at 30 fps is perfectly adequate in most situations. If you need super super res buy a Red. The price of this camera will be very high as they are wanting it to do everything.

Good morning Matt. Thanks for another informative piece. I honestly hope with the Z8, Nikon keeps a body that can carry my 200-500 lens easily. I have reasonably large hands, and I have found the few Sony's I've handled to be too small and uncomfortable.
