The way China structure their athletes is pretty smart. Now that you mentioned Tian Tao as a mentor/guide to Liu, this can be seen in a variety of sports as the younger men/women to take on the #1 spot once their best athletes start to fall off from their primes. As much as having your original #1 go against the top competitors to beat them out of having to battle them in the finals, if not that, wear them down physically and mentally.

Liu Huanhua has move up to 102kg weight class. Tian Tao stay at 89kg weight class.
Liu weight only 102kg, but compete in and still won the gold in the 109kg class Asian Games (2023)

Tian came back to the national team with the intention of going to/winning Paris 2024 so it wouldn’t make sense for him to quit and step into a coaching role (like lu) at this point.

It’s crazy how good he made that 215kg jerk given how grindy recovering from the clean was for him, imagine what he might do as his squatting an pulling strength goes up. I predict a future world record from him in the clean an jerk!

his the next generation of chinese weighlifters, i still want to watch Lu Xiaojun even if the guy is already in his 40s, Lu's technique how he squats is a pleasure to watch, always calm, same goes with tian tao and Shi Zhiyong even though he does tend to scream a lot.
