I've listened to this on cassette countless nights when going to sleep until I was 7 or 8 years old. 30 years later I remember every note. I MUST see this in person someday.

Russia had best novelists and composers in the 19th century.Russian school represented national pride and culture of Ortodox church on the best way.This conductor is gold.And ofc, there`s not a better place to perform this masterpiece than Hermitage in Paris of the East-Saint Petersburg.

The slow tempo at the start is just perfection the melancholy and grandeur are much more pronounced. By far my favourite interpretation of this march

Марш был написан Чайковским в сентябре 1876 года по просьбе дирекции Русского музыкального общества. Сочинение было посвящено борьбе славянских народов Балкан против Османского ига и написано в связи с событиями Русско-турецкой войны. Во время написания музыки, Чайковский называет его «Сербо-русским маршем».

Первое исполнение марша состоялось 5 (17) ноября 1876 года в Москве в симфоническом собрании Русского музыкального общества оркестром под управлением Н. Г. Рубинштейна на концерте в пользу Славянского благотворительного общества.

В произведении использованы музыкальные темы, характерные для народной музыки сербов, а также тема гимна Российской Империи — «Боже, Царя храни!».

Wonderful performance and unique interpretation! By unique I mean this march started much slower (ans softer, as if from a distance) than many other interpretations I am familiar with, but then it built up momentum and quickened the tempo. Yet the faster tempo now also shifted from time to time, seeming to reflect the marchers actual shifts of steps and movements. By the way, someone already mentioned the Imperial Russian Anthem that Tchaikovsky excerpted here. He also used it in other pieces, such as the one commemorating the Imperial Coronation and, of course the "1812" overture. Notice also how he imitated the heavy roles that clarinets and trumpets play in most military bands. Bravo!

The original name was Serbian-Russian march, but because of political reasons the name was changed.The march is deticaded to serbian and russian soldiers who fought in Serbo- Turkish war in 1800-is.The original composition is stored in some museum in Moscow, i cant rember which.
