Quick correction - Pontiac GTO is the first muscle car of the world, where Pontiac played a gamble by fitting a big block engine inside a non-pickup-truck vehicle to avoid upcoming stringent emissions regulation. The mustang is the first pony car - coupes/sedans with a small block engine. The main difference between small and big blocks engines mainly lies on how the torque is distributed across the RPMs. A "side-effect" difference is that small blocks at idle sound like "brr.brr.brr" whereas the big blocks at idle sound like "blah.blah.blah".
