Daddy, daddy, come and look
See what I have found
A little ways away from here
While digging in the ground

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
It's nothing, just a picture-book
They had before the war

Daddy, daddy, come and see
Daddy, come and look
Why, there's four or five
Little Melinda girls
Inside my picture book

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
There were lots of little girls like you
Before they had the war

Oh Daddy, daddy, come and see
Daddy, hurry do
Why, there's someone
In a pretty dress
She's all grown up like you
Won't you tell me why

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
That someone is your Mummy
You had before the war

Daddy, daddy, tell me if you can
Why can't things be
The way they were
Before the war began

Come away Melinda
Come in and close the door
The answer lies in yesterday
Before they had the war ...

I was 14 in 1972 when I first heard this hauntingly beautiful melody. It took a while to understand it. It still stirs up emotions and gives me chills.

One of the few advantages of being nearly 70 is that I saw all the great bands, with their original line ups

What a band Uriah Heep was. What a Voice, David Byron. What a time, end 60s. I was born in Russia, and discovered this song first time when I was 16. Since then-and untill now- my love, love to Uriah Heep.

Well written song with a haughtily beautiful melody. I've been following them since 1970. They are a fantastic group that has weathered the ages.

Their rock and vocals have been in my head since my college days 50 years ago. Took my girlfriend to the show. She's sitting opposite me now, and remembers the night. March 1st St.. David's Day, Denbighshire Tecnical Coolege, now Glyndwr University, Wrexham, Wales.
Also heard of them in the Blue Notes, Pittsburgh, when working around there for a few weeks, about 2010. Great sound!

I came across this with an old record and found it an extremeley moving song, especially in these times. Supported by the video, I consider this an almost epic statement.
