I have two simple rules out of this 7 ones:
- always ask about details and do it unexpectedly
- ask about what you asked before again after a while to see if it matches the previous answer

My previous manager lied about everything and lost track of what is true. He was even arguing with his boss, who kept correcting him. The guy also thought that everyone else was lying to him and wanted people to prove everything they said.

What he said applies to intentionally malicious / machiavellianist liars. In a normal society, often liars genuinely believe their lies - which are usually optimism / wishful thinking type lies. Such lies will occupy the same area of the liar's brain as truths, and hence won't be overtly discoverable. Fortunately, those lies are often harmless, or at least not intended to be harmful.

I once had an acquaintance who to my horror started using heroin. She answered my objections with the assurances that she was only playing around and could handle it.
One day she came to my door, fidgety, nose running with pin-point pupils to ask for a meal. I gave her food but again expressed my distress that she was using and she got angry with me, accusing me of spreading lies about her, she demanded to know who had told me the lie that she was using heroin.
I informed that SHE had told me that she was using heroin.
I then watched her struggle mentally as she tried to decide which incarnation of herself she would decide to call a liar, she'd forgotten to whom and about what she'd told the truth.
A liar looses track not only of their lies but of the truth.

I agree with all of these. Giving too many compliments to people doesn't necessarily make you a liar but it comes off as phony.
People who schmooze too much and are always giving compliments and everything is so amazing makes their compliments basically worthless and not very meaningful.
I'd rather get a compliment once in a while from somebody who rarely gives them out.

The reason people don't catch liars is because most people are very bad listeners, also remember most communication is none verbal as well. I am no lie detector but I love listening and that's why I spot liars.

as far as “don’t give enough details” there is sort of a sweet spot- liars might not give enough details but also people who are lying will often give way too many details to fill in their lie.

In police interrogations they will repeatedly ask the suspect to explain what they did during the day in question to see if they can keep their story straight and they will also get then to establish a story and then try to have them explain it in reverse order because if you have made up a bunch of lies and fake details about what you did from 7am - 7pm it’s really hard to then explain it backwards starting from 7pm going back to 7am. If you are recalling actual events you can do it but if you are trying to recall the lie you just told there is a good chance you are gonna fuck it up.
