Underwater walrus sounds

When I was little, one of my favorite movies was called “Arctic Tale”. And it’s still one of my favorites to this day! “Arctic Tale” is a movie by National Geographic that follows the lives of two young individuals that will grow into the two titans of the Arctic pack ice. A polar bear cub named Nanu and a walrus calf named Seela. From the day of their birth to the day both of them produce offspring of their own, these two children of the North Pole face unnatural changes never seen before. As global warming threatens the lives of all, both Nanu and Seela are seeing their own world turn upside down. Narrated by Queen Latifah, “Arctic Tale” is a must-see. There is some footage from “Arctic Kingdom: Life At The Edge” and “Realm Of The Great White Bear” included, too.
The otherworldly sounds in this video aren’t from outer space, but from the Arctic. They’re the mating calls of male walruses trying to woo females. Like other pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, and fur seals), walruses make all sorts of unusual sounds underwater. Produced deep in the throat, these walrus “love songs” ring out in the mysterious and dark waters of the Arctic Ocean. While some of the sounds resemble a bell, others sound like a creak and then a guttural thud. It takes a male walrus several years to perfect his mating call.
