Theresa May calls for 'short extension to article 50'

The prime minister says she is offering to sit down with the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, to come up with a plan to leave the European Union with a deal but says it must include her withdrawal agreement. May has called for a short extension to article 50 but wants the process to be finished by 22 May so that the UK does not have to take part in the European parliament elections
