We explore Thin Lizzy's 1976 breakout album, Jailbreak.

Jailbreak began life as a last-chance effort to prove to their label that they could produce a hit album.

Producer, John Alcock took the band to Ramport Studios in London and took a unique approach…he hired session musicians on some of the tracks to give the record a more commercial, "radio-friendly" vibe Namely, he hired keyboardist Tim Hinkley to play keyboard on “Running Back”. This drastically changed the style and caused tensions with some band members.

Thin Lizzy’s sound and lineup was constantly in flux, which presented some setbacks as they continued to push their career and sound forward.

In 1974 Lynott expanded the lineup to feature two guitarists after a revolving door that even included Gary Moore for a short stint. A funny anecdote is the reason that Lynott decided to have two guitar players is, in his words “The next time one of those c**** walk out, there will be another one there!”

The decision to stick with two guitarists would prove pivotal in the creation of the band's classic dual harmonized guitar sound that would go on to influence the next decade of guitar music.

Their infectious guitar harmonies influenced many hard rock and metal acts into the 80s, such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Metallica.

Jailbreak was ahead of its time, but its influence and timeless sound make it a classic album in every sense.

The U.K. had that same monitor cutout as a foldout to make it a gatefold but the artwork was a full cover sized showing all four members running with the monitor cover closed you get to see only three members running the U.S. cover was a single cover showing what you see on your VMP but no monitor cutout .

One of my fav bands, not even close. Huge influence. Went and saw Down years ago at a club here in Montreal, and pre-show, Thin Lizzy was on the PA!!!! I have an original copy. The front has the cut out hole, and the front swings away to reveal the cartoon inside.

I have an original copy that I've had since it came out (and I was in Jr High School). The front cover has the cartoon as part of it. The inner sleave is plain white. This is the USA release on Mercury.
