I came here after watching 'Shrinking' (TV series Shrinking (2023) - Season 2 Episode 4).
Right away, I fell in love with this song! It's beautiful!

My little brother has severe bipolar type I and watching this broke my heart. When Matt got to the line "Tranquilize the ocean/between the poles, " I knew it was about about this dizzying, terrifying and disorienting disorder. He's on meds and doing much better now, but there were several chaotic years and this captures the experience in a devastatingly beautiful way.

Along with Jason Isbell, The national have been the band that’s been beside me for 15 years of ups and down with depression, anxiety, addiction, and wrestling with my faith. Things have been a lot better over the past 4-5 years, but after turning 40 this year, I’ve had some rough months. And then this song comes out, and once again speaks directly to my soul. When my son was born little, and my anxiety was at its worse, “I’m afraid of everyone” was the song that moved me most. This one is an instant classic.

The last three years of my life have been exactly this. Manifestation became reality when I tried to end my life in March of 2021. My mind led me into utter darkness, and only through the love of friends, family, and beautiful music like this have I trudged the road back to hope. Not even doctors helped me through it, misdiagnosed as I was (combine misdiagnosed Bipolar-I with undiagnosed ADHD, and you get Hell, capitalized. Yes, it is a living terror when doctors make assumptions and refuse to ask the right questions). I can't tell you how maddening it is to be unable to describe the thoughts in my brain, and how wonderful it is to run into lyrics like this and point: "It looks and feels and sounds like THIS."

This song and Tropic Morning News are like glasses of glacier water in the desert. Thank you guys, sincerely. The constant rhythm of your music has changed my life for the better, and allowed me to be here a few days more. Okay, maybe many more. I anticipate walking many more miles with the First Two Pages of Frankenstein crammed in my ears. :)
