Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it was widely believed to have the world's second-strongest military, second only to the United States. However, the ongoing conflict has exposed significant weaknesses in Russia's military capabilities. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken famously remarked that Russia's military might is now seen as "the second-strongest in Ukraine." This video delves into the key reasons behind Russia's military struggles, from significant troop losses and low morale to outdated equipment and systemic corruption, all contributing to a crumbling military façade.

For the last 600 years we in the West seem to flip between belief that "Russia is an all mighty steam roller" and then following something like Klushino in 1610, Austerlitz in 1805, Tannenburg in 1914 or the 1939 Winter War in Finland we swap to thinking "Russia is a joke". In actual fact we should probably follow the advise of the British Stateman who said "Russia is never so strong as we think and Russia is never so weak as we think.

I was in the romaniam army.
Things i remember: commanders stoling our food and practicing at shooting range once a week, 3 rounds, semiautomatic fire with the AK 47. Once in 1.3 years, 5 rounds with a marksman rifle (PSL).
Our LMG (1 in the entire unit) could only fire 1 round at a time then open it and manually move the band.

Half a million young men dead, that is a shameful indictment of our species. And that is only on one side, let alone civilians.

Russia is a kleptocracy. Kleptocracies and military belligerence don't mix. The trickle down, horse and sparrow, effect really does work here. When you go to trot out your war horse you find the barn empty, the horse, everything stolen and gone and the only thing left is a couple starving sparrows.

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Case in point their third rate Army.

My advice to the Russians; start learning Chinese. Beijing will be your new overlords and you'll be doing as they say.

Vladimir told his doctor, : ‘Every day I wake up, I look in the mirror, I want to throw up. What’s wrong with me?’ The doctor replied: "I don’t know, but your eyesight is perfect."

I was growing up in Czechoslovakia during cold war and I can say with confidence that all Warsaw Pact armies including Soviet Army was potemkin village mirage supported by huge number of inexperienced, untrained conscripts and fat and stupid "professional" officers that were constantly drunk. It was a great job with early retirement with huge pension and bonuses. If NATO invaded it would be walking in the park. Warsaw Pact soldiers would happily exchange their guns for "West" Walkman.

The eighth crack is the loss of trained crews of tanks and other armored vehicles, pilots, and combat hardened sergeants. None of these can be replaced in any short time-frame.
