Who Really Invented The Lightbulb?

Is Thomas Edison the man we should all thank for giving us those glowing orbs of light? It's actually kind of a hard question to answer!

Another person to be mentioned is Lewis Latimer, who came up with a method to improve the production of carbon filaments.

Edison was a great businessman. Took a lot of other inventors ideas. Such is life

And being a legendary self-promoter and patent-troll, Edison was good at getting credit and recognition for his work (and that of others)

To expand a little on some previous comments, Edison tried to promote the use of direct current to homes, industry and so on. It would have worked, but there would have been generation stations every few blocks -- that's how far DC can travel. Nicola Tesla, (Serbian genius inventor and former Edison employee), with help from Westinghouse, promoted alternating current. Some of its advantages are that AC can travel further down a wire than DC, its voltage can be transformed up and down without (much) waste through simple electromagnetics and its alternations can be used to directly control the speed of motors and other equipment.

But we don't use Edisons Generator.Edison offered him $50k to improve his DC Generator. After compleeting the job when asked for the amount he laughed it off saying he was joking and said "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor."
