Saleen made a WIDEBODY Foxbody R Car in 1989? 1987 - 1988 - 1989 Saleen R Cars - The PAS Collection

The PAS Collection not only has a Ford Saleen R Model , it has a total of THREE in it. These cars were the factory race cars used by Saleen from 1987 to 1989 in the Escort Endurance Racing Series. They were competing against Morrison-Cook Camaro's among other models. Other cars in this series were Honda CRX's and C4 Corvettes. The classes were tight and competitive. As the seasons went on the cars had to be adapted to compete "within the rules". The 1989 cars were very trick and worked within the rules of the series at the time. Saleen claimed several class championships over the years but in 1987 they were able to secure all of the championship awards for the season. The racing heritage and needs for competition are what made the street model Saleen's what they are. The reason the 1987-1993 Saleens are 5 lug with four wheel disc brakes is because they had to have those pieces to compete better in the endurance racing. So the R cars were a massive influence to the street cars and how they handled. Steve's knowledge and expertise on the race track really did make it into the street cars he sold through Ford dealerships.

We're partnering with Performance Autosport to bring you a front row seat to view these precious cars up close. Mark curates and manages a collection of cars ranging from rare Foxbody Saleen Mustangs to rare race cars with manufacturers championship wins.

Stay tuned to the channel as we get to bring you up close to other Saleen's, Manufacturers Race Cars, and other vehicles of significance and rarity.

Many of these cars won't be seen at any shows or local gatherings. That's why we've partnered with Mark to showcase these vehicles and talk about their unique history and stories. Each vehicle we plan to introduce to you in video has historical provenance and significance. Add in desirability and low production numbers with that provenance and you have a car that is irreplaceable.

Nice piece Bob. Love the stories from back in the day of "stock" engine builders blueprinting engines by parts matching -- rockers, pushrods, valves, the best springs, rods, pistons, etc. Looking for rods and pistons that were the closest in weight. Later, rules got tighter on stuff like that with eventually the catch all rule at the end of the book which said something like -- "And you can't do anything unless these rules say you can." That didn't slow 'em down much....

So much good info, my favorite video so far. Great job guys.👍
There is an old motorweek video from 1988 were a Mclaren with stock Ford brakes actually stops 3 feet shorter from 55 mph to zero compared to a 1987 Saleen with four wheel discs. That surprised me, but I guess the payoff of those Saleen brakes is in the endurance over a long race and the increase in control and modulation when braking deeper into a corner.

Saleen got caught cheating and blamed it on Kenny Brown it's the real reason why he left the race team.
