Why the MiG-29 is a Popular Choice for Many Countries

The MiG-29 is favored by many countries because it is more affordable than Western aircraft, allowing them to maintain a larger air force on a smaller budget. Additionally, the Russian aircraft come with cheaper ammunition and ordinance systems, further reducing operational costs.

It's a good airframe, with decent speed, low maintenance cost, and just modern enough to keep relevant. But it's not easy to modernise, and the Russian folks didn't have that in mind when they designed it

Russia mostly sells its weapon systems unconditionally, while westeen weapons come with an array of conditions.When India asked the USSR for 125 mig 21s in the early 60s, they delivered the planes, also handed over the technology transfers and even provided us with a lisence if we ever wanted to build them in India. Infact, India even trained Iraqi MiG pilots for a few years. Around yhe same time, we also bought an aircraft carrier from the UK. During the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war, that single carrier Played a critical role. A few months prior to the outbreak of hostilities, the carrier was rendered inoperable as it had a faulty drum which had to be replaced. The UK at that time refused to sell the spare part. Our engineers and technicians had to work hard to get the carrier operational again. They found a way to operate the carrier at a reduced speed bypassing the drum. This is the problem with western military transactions..

Same reason the t-series tanks are everywhere. They’re cheap, they’re mass produced, and parts are abundant. Unless you have the money to develop your own, they’re probably your best option.

As a USMIL Aviation stan… that is an unbelievably good-looking airframe. Always loved the way their 4th Gen stuff was put together. The Sukhoi as well, something about the way the fuselage is offset above the root of the wings reminds me of Concorde.

You skipped one important detail... They are reliable for skillful pilots. Remember that time when, an Indian fighter pilot shot down a Pakistani F-16 using a MIG-21...😅

Also something to consider is the MiG-29 is adapted to take off from extremely poorly maintained runways (low budget).

On takeoff, the inlets will close up and the slats on top of the inlets will open up so there is practically no chance a pebble or anything will be sucked in.

Quick answer: the platform is good and its very capable of upgrades, its also pretty cheap.

Russian planes are famed for their reliabilty. In times of war, that is one of the most important factor in winning or losing.
The Tiger tank was one of the most sophisticated tanks in ww2 yet it was plaged with reliability issues that were hard to fix in war where resources are limited.
Eventually, most destroyed or lost tanks were thanks to the crew not able to fix it and thus sabotaging it or leaving it behind. It was its own worst enemy, a lesson the Russians cherish

MiG-29 could run on Diessel and had Small doors on the engine intakes and small intakes on top of the wing to takeoff from unpaved runways, fun curiosity about the MiG-29 specifically the G variant used by Germany, in 1994 it Shocked NATO in a Exercice with its Head mounted display (HMD), IRTS and the High Off Bore R-73 smashing American F-16s in every single Dogfight, this made america sweatt nervously and put an HMD on every fighter they had and create the AIM-9X and the AIM-132 ASRAAM
