Afterload and preload is simple.
Afterload is a resistance or pressure. Preload is a amount of blood. Imagine you have a tank in your home. When you open the tap water fill up in the tank after closing the tap, amount of water present in the tank is preload. Now tank has to empty the water in order to supply it to somewhere. So there will be a lot of external resistance water will try to push back to the tank but tank is strong enough to send the water out - it is your afterload. So preload is amount of blood present in the heart in your right and left ventricles at the end of relaxation.and then contraction period starts, so left or right ventricles have to overcome the pressure coming from system circulation or pulmonary circulation- this is your afterload
