The fact that his father inspired his books is awesome! His father was a real life legend. Alexandre Dumas would spend his life basically writing his father back into the history he'd been erased from.

I love that you did this one. It carries on the story of Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. Both father and son, great in their times, but tragically abandoned by the country they gave so much to. Both men deserve a respected place in history

“There is neither happiness nor misery in the world; there is only the comparison of one state with another, nothing more. He who felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness”
Alexandre Dumas

Count of Monte Cristo is such an excellent story. Count of Monte Cristo, Three Musketeers and Man in the Iron mask are all timeless works that everyone can enjoy. Love the video. Interesting to learn more about Dumas' life.

Athos, Portos, Aramis and D'Artagnan are the guys who still inspire millions! Thank you Simon for the biography of this great writer!

The Three Musketeers is my favorite book and film (1974 version). I used to read it every summer. I have even read it in French, I found an old school copy with notes and vocabulary. What a writer he was! And what a life he had. Thank you for sharing this!

My favorite fiction author. The d'Artagnan romances are great, but The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the greatest works of fiction of all time.

I remember reading a biography about Dumas in my teens, I think. The book referred to him as a mulatto and son as a quadroon. Perhaps when that was written, that was the vernacular of the day. However, the fact that I remembered these terms 40 years later still disturbs me. The man, and his son, were great...

I was 8 when I learned why I was called a mulatto. My mother, being in the USMC, couldnt teach me everything so the dictionary became my friend. I had already read the Three Musketeers and never shook why Dumas face seemed so familiar. It was basically myself. Though considered a quadroon, his portrait on the book seemed like an older me. Channels like this make the internet meaningful and give solice to kids now that feel different. Its channels like this that could have helped alot in the '80's when I was growing up. Hope some kids are watching.
