Liquid paraffin is a very commonly used moisturising ingredient, and can be found in many different types of moisturiser. It is also sometimes referred to as white mineral oil.

It is what is called an emollient; basically an ingredient that promotes skin hydration and suppleness. Emollients help to smooth out and support the skin’s barrier by forming a film on top of the skin, thereby, increasing moisture retention within the skin and preventing water loss.

Liquid paraffin has a very long history of use, and a very safe record. Studies show that it is not toxic, nor is it irritating or dangerous. In fact, white mineral oils are even sometimes orally ingested to aid with digestion.

Using liquid paraffin on your skin is very safe, even if you use it regularly. Studies have shown that it does not produce any negative effects on the skin, and there is little to no penetration into the skin.

I used liquid paraffin throughout my pregnancies. I'm still trying to figure out why women don't know the qualities in liquid paraffin. Thank you for this fabulous article.

When I was an LMT we were not allowed to use any kind of mineral or petroleum products on our clients because it can clog the lymphatic system and cause cancers
