Super Mario World is a game full of secrets and bizarre mysteries. However, one of its greatest remaining unsolved puzzles rests not within the game, but on the cartridge itself! Does this legendary SNES cart truly exist, and is it the key to discovering the beta version of Super Mario World? Or was this all a ploy by Nintendo to make us think Super Nintendo cartridges were cooler than they actually are, and underhandly boost their profits exponentially. Today we dive in and have a look for ourselves!

When we got out SNES back when it first came out, I saw the raised logo and it really bothered me for some reason. So, I wrote to Nintendo and asked why it was raised on the box (also that i noticed the different label on the cart, and I thought there was something different with the controllers, but I don't remember now)
Weeks later, I got a letter in the mail. Some guy from NoA typed up a nice reply. He said I have a great eye for spotting the differences. He also said that it was a pre-production model used for the early press and displays. They couldn't mold the raised logo just right for production, so they sunk it into the plastic instead. He also mentioned that the raised logo model was used in ads because they needed the boxes done before the products were complete. A good while later, I got a free copy of Mario All-Stars addressed to me. We never paid for the S&H, and my mom was convinced we stole her money to buy the game, since my brother was begging her to send away for it.
I don't really know, but I'd like to think that guy ad NoA sent me the cart cause he liked that a little kid was just *that* interested in the packaging.

The cartridge is definitely edited. Look at the top of the blue background, it's not even close to being straight lol. On a real cartridge, that part is perfectly straight. This was definitely cut out from something, maybe with actual scissors, and placed on there.

the cartridge with yoshi's feet behind the black border is a canadian cartridge, still have no idea how that happens but it's only on the canadian release

3:34 - This design was used on all original releases and rereleases from 1993 and onwards up to the end of the hardware lifespan in North America.
However, Japan's had a longer lifespan which lasted up to 2003.

Wait until he finds out that the pictures of hamburgers in fast food advertisements aren't real either. 😁

These things happen all the time in marketing, the photos are taken months in advance and based on what is assumed is final.
But it’s never final.

If this keeps up, you'll speculate that the NES in the Zelda commercial is a prototype, too, because of the black Power and Reset buttons.

I remember being handed the box for Hanukah that year and playing Super Mario World for the first time. Best Mario game ever

Having the name on the top edge of the cartridge like that reminds me of the NES PlayChoice-10/Select system where you loaded multiple cartridges into it - by reading the name in the "slot" you knew which game to start.

Interesting. I didn't realize there were so many variations of Super Mario World to begin with.

Another great video. Wanted to say much respect for the song at the end of the video.

I was hoping others would show the love for the series too.

*Holy Gigas.*

*Was this the same cartridge that was used for advertisements of that game!?*

I had the set that came with SMW but only had one controller. I only ever had one controller for my whole dang childhood.

There was never a special box set for Mario All-Stars or Street Fighter II on the SNES in the US?

We had loads of dedicated boxes in the UK, there's even a super rare green cricket game one released only in Australia!

This isn't some mysterious "lost cartridge", it's just a replica made for that photo.

I'm a European so our SNES and its cartridges share the design with the Japanese counterpart.
But of course, I know American cartridges from the flea market.
Since I was a kid back then I didn't remember the labels on top, really but I still think those top labels are handy, especially since many just threw away those paper boxes.

Nintendo’s “Control Deck” obsession comes from their attempt to disassociate the NES from terminology associated with the 1983 video game crash… the same reason they never call the game paks cartridges. They weren’t the only ones doing this: SEGA called their console the “Power Base.”

Anyway, there were plenty of sticker bundles for NES (known as “bonus bundles” by retailers). For example, there is a challenge set with a bonus Dr. Mario. That said, DKC is not a weird exception: the Mario Set replaced the Super Set for the last couple years with the Super Mario World + Super Mario All*Stars cartridge. The Killer Instinct Set (NOT the bonus bundle!) was sold all over and Walmart even had a bonus bundle version that adds a Player’s Guide and hat. IMO, it should’ve been called the Combo Set. ;) BTW, DKC never included a dust cover so that doesn’t belong in your DKC set.

One more thing: Nintendo never removed the lock from the original Japanese and PAL consoles so I think they were worried about Americans hurting themselves.

I got one of these when I was 6 back in 1991. Didn't know it would become such a point of discussion.
