Timothy, you made that nice man's day who stopped his car to speak with you! You're such a kind fellow all the time. Bethel, NC's town center has the potential to become a nice, vibrant, beautiful place if their town government play its cards right. FYI - that faded Hines Ice Cream ghost mural on the side of that vacant building once served to boldly advertise the scrumptious ice cream that was made by the former Hines Ice Cream Company, established in 1923, that was based in Kinton, NC for many decades. Makes my mouth water just thinking about it! 😅

I completely agree with your statement that people want to live around beauty. I remember Bethel when it was an attractive, thriving little community. One would think the town could benefit from its proximity to a steadily growing Greenville, but that has not been the case. Bethel has lost population in every census since 1990, with the biggest drop being the most recent 2020 census. Poorly maintained buildings and boarded up storefronts will be a sad, common sight as you continue visiting towns in this portion of North Carolina. The towns suffer significantly from population loss, changing market forces, and in many cases leadership with poor vision and an unwillingness to make hard decisions to address the decline. The result is a downtown of decrepit buildings which discourage anyone from moving there to live or start a business. There are some exceptions. Edenton, New Bern, and Washington with vibrant downtowns are notable examples of towns doing something right, and Tarboro seems to be reasonably stable though it also could benefit from an infusion of investment.
