So bird dies of being hit by a massive object at high speed, then dies again from being roasted by the exhaust, then dies one more time when hitting the ground...
Yeah, that's overkill.

Shuttle launches never get old. That whole flight system was audacious and fantastic. It looks wonderful

its just so human that a return to flight launch, where everyone is extra tense, had the only recorded birdstrike

I remember watching this one live and seeing the bird hit. Nobody believed me till it was replayed later.

I think birds need to evolve external ears if they can't hear a shuttle launch right beside them

Believe it or not Scott, I was the Engineer-In-Charge for the HDTV broadcast of the launch of STS-114 for HDNet. It was a joint broadcast with HDNet and NASA. We supplied the the HDTV cameras, which replaced NASA's normal SD cameras, and 2 separate feeds were created. NASA in SDTV and HDNet in HDTV. We (HDNet-HDTV) noticed the bird strike at launch, but the NASA folks (SDTV) did not. Funny side note, HDNet did not send a director down to for the HDNet feed as management knew I had work at NASA for 13 years and figured I had it "under control". So, I am officially credited as "Director" for the HDNet live coverage of STS-114's launch.

The level of bad luck that bird has to be struck by an actively launching space shuttle....

I've never really realized how quick the roll maneuver was. They were flying upside-down in a matter of seconds.

There, now the video is complete.

The space shuttle was an incredible program. Sad its gone and we'll never witness another launch.

That poor bird. Got clubbed by a fuel tank and then got roasted.

The worst live spectacle involving birds, was when the Pope released the peace doves from the balcony of the Holy See in Rome, and the dove was eaten by crows.
They successively hired a falconer from Switzerland, so the doves were protected during successive releases...

Not just having that much power is impressive.. but having that much control over that much power. How quickly it rolls and then stops with that much mass. Just incredible

FYI, the “sway” of the vehicle is normal, accounted for and timed out just right so it’s straight up again before the boosters come on and it leaves the pad. You welcome.

Just insane the amount of thrust needed to leave Earth. The acceleration is so rapid.
