How to use Counter Steering to Lean and Turn Your Motorcycle

In today’s video we’ll talk about how the motorcycle steering works, and specifically we’ll focus on the concept of countersteering. If you haven’t heard about countersteering yet – this is your lucky day, because today you’ll learn how you can lean your bike really fast and really far, like you never did before. And if you already heard of countersteering, but still have some doubts about it and can’t wrap your head around it – don’t worry, I promise it’ll become super clear by the end of this video. All you have to do – is to listen and watch closely. I divided the whole explanation into small and very easy steps, followed one by one. Again, all you have to do is to watch, listen, and not skip anything, because each step will be very important.

A little info about me. My name is Andrei Bodrov, originally I'm from Moscow, Russia, and now I live in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Excellent explanation of counter steering. Most of the time, you just hear, "You have to counter steer, " but what does that mean? It's the "...brief period when we apply the force on the handle bars to change the lean angle..." Your explanation of initiating lean is the easiest for most people to grasp, and is simple - initiate lean opposite the turn direction so that the bike can turn into the direction desired. Plus, you are not leaning, only the bike is. You are actually staying upright, allowing the bike to lean beneath you.

9:23 This is the core summary of the entire topic! Countersteer is any change of handlebar direction that is opposite to lean angle. Thanks for separating the leaning from turning!

We can even expand the understanding. When we are done turning, we briefly turn the handlebar ‘more inside’ to make the bike stand up. It’s also the same countersteering.

We better call it “the principle of countersteer” instead of treating it like some special technique. All self-balancing objects must move its lower body outside in order to lean inside. All bikes change the lean angle by the principle of countersteer. Turn right to lean left, not go left.

I've been riding for several years now, and you are the first person to explain counter-steering clearly and in a way I was able to understand.
