Be it students or expats, right from day 01 in Germany, you have interesting memories to share with your family or friends. What complicates the matter is the fact you have to choose a SIM card amongst 100s of offers in the market. Many students never give it a thought about how much money they can save if they choose the mobile network operators (MNOs) wisely. In Germany, there are 3 mobile network providers namely: Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and O2. All other companies are sub-suppliers or sub-brands of these MNOs.

Based on an independent study by project-CHIP, Telekom was rated as the best operators purely based on network coverage and closely followed by Vodafone and O2. The rating showed no significant difference between the operators. Thus, it is clear that network coverage cannot be a only criteria to determine the best mobile network provider in Germany.

Thank you so much for the tips! I’ll be visiting Germany for 2 weeks for Christmas and New Year period, so looking at your suggestions I would probably choose a Lidl Connect prepaid SIM card. I’ve also heard that now to get a SIM card there one would have to register at the post office first, is that true? Otherwise, should I order one online through the Lidl website and collect at the store upon arrival, seeing that I only arrive in Frankfurt at 8.30pm, and would probably only reach town around 9.30pm when most shops are closed?
