I first heard the Pat Benatar version when it came out (yeah I'm old) and that was the only version I knew and I liked it well enough. Until many years later when I heard the John Mellencamp original and, well I never looked back. Much like growing up listening to Manfred Mann's Blinded by the Light and liking it until I heard the original Springsteen. Both originals are far superior in every way even though I knew the covers first.
