This a demonstration of the upward firing guns (Schrage Musik) re-invented by Rudolph Schoenert in WWII which gave new life to obsolete aircraft and took allied bombers by complete surprise. Rudolph started advocating his idea in 1941, and his first aerial victories occurred in May 1943, however most bomber crews didn't know what was hitting them until 1944, most had guessed it was ground fire.
The Schrage Musik equipped Night Fighters approached from below and behind, by the direction of the Navigator (Radar Operator) whom could determine Distance, Height, and Speed. The pilot (keeping an eye for the target) would just listen to the information passed by the Navigator and fly according to it..
"O.K. one kilometer out now, thirty meters above, straight ahead."
Upon reaching visual range (2-800m) the night fighter must make visual contact with the bomber, being careful to stay cast against the dark ground than the dimly lit sky. The Tail-gunner could spot the night fighter at any moment. Fortunately for the night fighters, a flaw in the Lancaster made it hard for the tail-gunner to see below the turret. The Night Fighter Pilot continues his approach.
Where I shot was very dangerous as the wingroot on the Halifax (between the fuselage and the inner engine nacelles) is also a bomb bay that can carry up to 500lbs. Also as you can see, when the Handley Page Halifax's wing spar gave up it could have fell and hit us.
After the pass, you dive and turn opposite of the wing you damaged (port wing = right hand turn) otherwise a crippled bomber tends to turn with you!
