I haven't been to any English speaking countries yet but I hope I will go someday. I have only been to Russia. And when I was there, I had a good chance of speaking Russian. It made me confident and fluent in Russian.
And now I am at home. I have been speaking Russian since I returned back to my home country. I have learned that while you are staying in a country where Russian or English is spoken, you can be immersed into this language and you will start speaking like native speakers. It's all about listening and using the language actively.
When you don't use language, you can easily forget it. Language never stay the same. If you use it, you will excel in it and if you don't use it, you will lose it.
That's what I have experienced to this day.
