If BestBuy puts this Zenbook on sale again I'll instantly buy it this time around. Great review Andrew, this one might be the Ryzen laptop I've been waiting for.

I’ve got my laptop after watching this review. So satisfied, and never regret buying it. The downside RAM is not upgradeable, but consider the price, it’s not a huge deal breaker.

All in all, thanks for your review. Underrated channel with “no non-sense” content and straight to the point review. You got a new sub! Keep up your great work.

Hey Andrew, thanks for the in-depth review. Just want to point out the actual reason about the performance deficiency on this laptop and that is not due to LPDDR4 ram. The Ram runs at 4266 MHz which is actually faster than ddr4 3200 and should give a boost to both cpu and integrated GPU. Another thing, LPDDR4X is actually costlier than normal ddr4. It saves power without sacrificing performance as it requires less power to run at higher speed. The main culprit in all these new Zenbook series is the max allowed TDP. While Lenovo laptops allow as much as 40W during short term boost. 25W long term boost and 15W continuous in performance mode, ASUS just capped it max 18W in performance and only 7W in balanced mode, hence the poor cpu performance. It has the Ram speed but due to lower tdp, neither cpu, noevthe GPU can run at higher boost clock speed for longer time to take advantage of the Ram speed. There are cases where the Zenbook with 4700u actually performs lower than 4500u in IdeaPad Flex 5 due to the Power limit restriction.

no USB C charging is not really a negative since if they had it they probably wouldn't include a barrel charger and your usb c port would be blocked by the charger. if they had usb c charging + a barrel charger that would be fine

Andrew, I appreciate your review of this model. Thanks!

I picked this up when it was on sale for $549 a few weeks ago. At that price, I think it's an excellent deal (though the first thing I did was upgrade the SSD to a larger capacity Samsung 970 EVO Plus I had lying around).

Yes, I wish it had 16GB RAM. Yes, I wish it was DDR4. Yes, it should have USB-C charging (although a $9.00 adapter bought off of Amazon fixed that issue for me). But I am loving the versatility of this thing. It's extremely small and light for a 14", with a screen good enough to do photo editing, bright enough to use outdoors, and it definitely does work for gaming (although not on battery). I've played bouts of CS:GO, Dirt Rally, Day of Infamy, Skyrim, and other games for probably about an hour at a time without issues (and these days, I don't have more time than that to devote to a gaming session anyway).

Speaking of gaming, that is the one part of the review where I disagree. Andrew states that you "get a little bit of a boost" with the MX350, but actually, the game results presented show that in 3 out of 4 games, you get *double* the frame rate over the integrated Vega graphics. I'd call that more than a little boost. :)

Again, for $549, when you consider the complete package, I think this laptop is a great deal.

I have an Asus Vivobook with i7 and an MX150. Most of the time I keep the GPU disabled (I run Linux) or on W10 bias the power settings towards efficiency over power. Otherwise I get a big battery run time hit. Like you I got it on sale and it was priced the same as an i5 laptop at the time. Looking back through I'd do just fine without the i7 and GPU and I'll probably shop there or mid range Ryzen in the future. Asus as brand I have no problems with it's been reliable. Nice review thanks

Hey, Andrew. Thanks for the honest review. It is good to have that level of insight before committing to buying the unit. In my honest opinion, it is quite unfortunate that this unit was not able to appropriately utilize the discrete GPU. I also agree that the placement of the exhaust was rather poor. Keep up the awesome work.

I bought this at $700 went on sale 3 days later so best buy price matched to $550. There is a software issue with sleep on the machine. Occasionally it'll ramp up the fan for no reason and only a shutdown will correct it. Not sure if this is just on Windows. Also the nvme is one of the slowest ever. But still fast enough that you probably would never notice unless you work with huge directories or extremely large files. Other than that at $550 and only 2.5lbs it's hard to beat.
