Pale Blue Dot (2020)

This isn't the video I planned to make this week, but I thought now might be appropriate to consider once again the "Pale Blue Dot" by Carl Sagan. It features the iconic "Pale Blue Dot" photo taken by Voyager 1, which was recently reprocessed in 2020 to bring out more detail and clarity in the image. Hopefully Carl's words will help us to remember the importance of treating each other more kindly and cherishing the Pale Blue Dot, the only home we've ever known.

I was 12 when this photo was taken and I was 20 when I first read Carl Sagan talk about it. I am now nearly 43 and it is more important than ever. We need to expand our horizons but it’s difficult when curled up into the foetal position. From this vantage point each is their own universe. The naval more engaging than anything beyond.

Sorry, though this was a nice version, Carl Sagan said it better.

Carl Sagan died before I was born, but still through his books and words, changed my perspective and made more curios about the world

I love this. I often look up into the stars and just wonder, what's going on out there, and indeed, some extraterrestrial life could be out there, looking at us through their own device, only able to see us as a speck and wonder "I wonder if that rock is empty, or if it has life?"
It's so silent out there and peaceful in space, and yet so loud on this rock. I see why people prefer space.

The photo shown is a picture taken by Voyager 1 very, very, very far away from Earth or even the Sun, north of the Solar plane. The Pal Blue Dot is part of Voyager 1’s Solar System Family Portrait. Other spacecrafts have taken a picture of Earth from the Outer Solar System like the Cassini Spacecraft. Cassini took many photos of Saturn from a lower angle, showing all of its main rings, it’s dust rings and then The Pal Blue Dot can be seen in the bottom right corner by Saturn.
I think there’s a another spacecraft that might’ve took a picture of Earth from the outside but I don’t what it is.

Gave me goose bumps as it does every time i hear that speech. I was only 8 when I heard Carl Sagan speak those words and 40 years later it still strikes me to my core. Well done and well said. ☀️🌎

Carl Sagan. Poet of science.
Excellent narration, BTW. You really captured the emotional gravitas of his words.
And thank you, to the Voyager Imaging Team, for making the solar system family portrait a reality.

It's a miracle that we all live on the pale blue dot and yet many couldn't give a damn about its condition, with things global warming and excessive waste dumping. We *MUST* treat Mother Earth with more respect and love. Thank you for a wonderful video, Christian. It makes me love our blue dot more and more.
