Oh gosh, I struggled with this. Going through cane training helped me, I think when you do decide it may help you to accept your sight needs. I went through it for years. Here if you need a guide dog, you have to do cane training so you can get out if your dog is ill. This made me take the training. I hope you can stop holding yourself back and do the formal training. I feel for you right now. Take the plunge, it’s really not that bad. It’s your own feelings your wrestling with. Good luck.

I have had a lot of white training with an o&m instructor in the past and whenever I move into a new area I have to have more instruction with a cnib o&m instructor.I am experienced using my white came that I use everyday weather permitting.I have had help from people, grocery store staff and in the mall stores when I go clothes and footwear shopping etc.I do avoid a certain area of the sidewalk around my complex where I live due to the bumpy, chipped cracks and potholes and even though my white came with the worn out roller ball tip picks up on how bad this area is so I walk across the parking lot area with parked cars that can be dangerous which is a short distance to the bus stop that I walk to take the bus to wherever I want to go.I love in Alberta and I have phoned the city officials about the area of the sidewalk that is in bad shape but nothing has been done yet to fix this area

Hey Matt it's me Sam it's good to see a video from you again I'm just a little over a year and using the cane and it's usually been just on my own I've never actually had formal cane training but however I have had orientation and Mobility back in 1979 pretty much all the way up through about the 8th grade.During that time I was briefly introduced to the cane my Mobility instructor basically just show me what it was and very briefly on how it was to be used but like I said it was not in depth training So currently I feel confident enough that I can use it on my own also being the fact thatI don't really use it for full navigation all the time there are times where I do but there are also times where I don't need to use it and I just carry it by my side most of the time just just fried edification so like I say I just carry it off to the side or in front of me and it's not even touching the ground . However I do have formal cane training in mind and they probably do it sometime in the future if I feel that I need it. What I would say to you is that if it makes you feel more confident to travel alone then yes get some orientation and Mobility training with the cane. One thing I wonder is if o&m training is free or is it something you have to pay for?when I received o&m training it was through special education services when I was in school along with services for the blind so it didn't cost anything for me to have that training but now later in life as an adult out of school I don't know about that now.

Hi Matt David 35 from Brisbane Australia I was born 3 months premature with cataracts and developed glaucoma as an adult I see the top line of an the chart and not much further down I realise this vedio is a year old but wanted to share my views I was formally cane trained during orientation and mobility when I was 17 and preparing to leave school in year 12 I was walking through a car park with my instructor and almost hit by a car I didn't see. I think formal training (which I'm sure you've had by now) is really important a. You gain proper technique to make you a safer more confident cane user and in Australia; (unless you but a cane on eBay something which could be dangerous if u end up with an Incorrect size) no blind and low vision organisation will sell you a cane without assessment of your needs and formal cane training.

So if you've not already done so find a provider and take formal training you'll be glad you did in the end.

Hello Matt, i'm from the U.K., i too had struggles, i tried to learn cane training from utube, but it came to the point that i had to get in touch with my local visual council to book for cane training g, it was a big decision so i know how your feeling right now.
Matt doing the cane training is the best thing, my instructor was so lovely, she put my mind at ease, and you know she never pushed me i could do things at my own pace.
when my mobility instructor said we're goi g out and about using the cane, i became like a child, scared and vu erable, but the more you trust, the easier it becomes, at first we went to places that nobody k ew me so i could be comfortable with the cane, as time progressed it became easier.
so what did i learn. i learnt how to use the cane not only walking with as you know put the cane in front of you and glide the cane in a small arch going from side to side, in a small arch shape, i learnt how to go up and down stairs with the cane, and how to use on escalators, how to get on and off buses and trains safely with the cane.
i instructor was so warm and friendly, and encouraged me every cane step.
Matt i know how you are feeling but take the first step do it, and you will wonder why didn't i do this earlier.
good luck to you, and sending positive thoughts to you.
sorry for long post lol xx

if I have time will go to formal training. Why? you have the full potentials to gain learning. Here in my location has lacking of agency and mostly are in the city.
