I went on a date with a gal who was a daughter and grand daughter of Veterans and she flat out told me that she was only interested in me because of the benefits. this was back in 2011. needless to say I found a reason to leave and never talk to her again. I earned my benefits for me and I value them and I will not throw them around like a sheet in the wind.

I fell in love, got married and then after a year of living with my VET partner discovered the VA loans benefits when looking for our first home. It seems bonkers that people actually see Vets as a financial benefit, instead of a whole person. Still on the search for the home though as rates are not favorable for us at this time.

When I was PCSing to Germany, I was riding the bus to the airport & struck up a conversation with the lady bus driver. After asking me about where I was going and the places I'd been she goes, "Wow, if I wasn't married, I'd give you my number! I wanna live in all those places & you get those benefits!" I was like, "uh... Ok, well have a nice evening..." She was pretty direct about it. Wasn't my type, though. But it was kind of funny.

On the other end of things, my partner of 7 years and I are trying to use his benefit and marriage isn’t for us. But because we want to buy a house next year, courthouse marriage it is!

I know the requirement for marriage is to protect people from scams like you mentioned, but bummer it can force you into conventional marriage if that’s not your thing!
