Bucky Hyena- Food Time Follies (1919)

After being rudely awakened from his sleep, a spotted hyena named Bucky gets very hungry so wanders around town in search of food to satisfy his empty belly. However he has to get through a few nuisances in order to get what he wants.

Gonna be honest, the title card is probably the cringiest thing in this video. When I was making it, I thought having name scratched off would make it spooky or mysterious, like it was a lost episode or something. As if to say "Ooooh, who could've made this cartoon? It's a mystery!" but now the more I think about it, the more I realize just how stupid that was...

I love the juxtaposition between how conceptually Bucky is absolutely horrifying and the sense of whimsy he retains through this style of animation. Very fun to watch. Although that didn't stop me saying oh no for the policeman the whole time he was chasing him.

I'm not even sure how many times I replayed the butcher scene. The black screen and music cut really caught me off guard and then I just had to go back to catch those frames. Bucky looks totally crazed! Really great work.

I know everyone is saying it and i know im late 2 the party but the butcher scene is such a good way to portray horror in older cartoons. It gave the impression that things were going to get worse and more unsettling from there, possibly more quiet cuts/a jumpscare who knows, but the fact that the ending, albeit relating to cults(im assuming) is so light hearted like the rest of the cartoon makes it such a tone shift and i *love* it. Its so subtle and i **love** it

This is what BATIM should've been. The fact this is a mix of really accurate to the older days and the terror you feel especially in the butcher scene is so well done. I really hope to see more stuff with Bucky, this is fantastic.

I honestly really liked this. What makes it unique, and in my opinion more successful than skitzo or suicide mouse, is the fact that it's very subtle In how it plays out. It starts and continues as a normal cartoon, but if this was a skitzo cartoon it would just end in alot of screaming and murder, but in this toon it would have it's horror element subtlety placed through out video. So when the horror actually starts and ends it isn't expected or treated as a cliche, instead it shocks us. (this being my own opinion of course) I know you're probably interested in other stuff/projects but personally I think it would be a good idea to revisit this series as it's almost nothing I've seen before.

I will admit, once I looked at the description part way through, it ruined the scary parts for me. Before I even full knew it was scary, I was smiling the entire time. You nailed everything. Usually when people try to capture this style the miss out on a few things or do stuff a little differently then how I feel cartoons like these would have done it, like cuphead. Though it's all minor nitpics. But this is spot on. At no point did I see something and think "well I don't think that's how it would play out" or "I feel like they'd move a lot stiffer" (exceptions to the intentional bits though even those situations wouldn'tbe unexpected). I can tell you did your homework on this one. You are for sure getting my subscribe!

So.. i noticed that the buildings in this cartoon are all crooked and decayed, having various windows smashed, doors boarded up, and the most interesting.. toxic barrels, one of them being Bucky’s home..
That would explain the anthropomorphic animals in this world, including Bucky.. that maybe for living in a toxic barrel, got that “demogorgon-like” mouth, and his extreme violence.
