When evaluating one's risk of cardiovascular disease, sex, race, and ethnicity are important considerations that are sometimes left out with traditional risk factors. This scientific statement explores how behavioral and environmental factors, social determinants of health, and sex specific factors affect cardiovascular health and risk in women. Dr. Jennifer Mieres is a clinical researcher, professor of cardiology at the Zucker School of Medicine, and Northwell Health's Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer. Dr. Gladys Velarde is a clinical researcher, and professor and medical director at the Women's Cardiovascular Heart Program at the University of Florida, College of Medicine in Jacksonville. Together they were co-authors on this statement and in this episode, they introduce their own lifelong journey of understanding cardiovascular disease in women and discuss the importance of considering “non-traditional” risk factors, including sex-specific risk factors.
