I Love You Like An Alcoholic Lyrics

Heavy humid night. Corner of Park and Main
Cast that first glance: your smile, my veins
At maximum capacity, blood pumping so fast
My girl, if looks gave heart attacks
The dangerous men in the shadows were like an audience
And even the meanest among them
Had a special little shine in their eyes when they saw us walk by
Walked about twenty blocks talking about good bars and better towns than this one
Kissed that first night
Then the rain opened up the sky to get
One last kiss, I love you like an alcoholic
One last kiss, I love you like a statuette
One last kiss, I need you like I need a broken leg
I was getting off the late shift, attempting to recover
Crumpled up the bus pass and tossed it into the gutter
Some handsome dark stranger, you were standing there on the corner
You had those compelling magnetized eyes that you must have lost when you got older
Seven blocks in, my fingers brushed your hand
I blushed, you laughed, but you seemed a little sad
I ain't one to jump a ship, but I absolutely knew
I was six steps in when I fell into you
One last kiss, I love you like a broken pot
One last kiss, I love you like a pack of dogs
One last kiss, I need you like I need a gaping head wound
One last kiss, I love you like an alcoholic
One last kiss, I love you like a negligee
One last kiss, I need you like I need a broken leg

This song gives me an emotion that can't be replicated by any other group of sounds in the range of sounds humans can hear

Since i'm bored right now, here's my interpretation of the song:
The verses that aren't chrous make it sound like a love song, but it's not. It talks about how they met, and how they think their relationship appears to outsiders. So, on the outside, their relationship doesn't seem so bad. Although in private, it's very toxic.
Now that that's out of the way, I can talk about the chorus! The line "I love you like an alcoholic" implies that well, he loves her. But you have to stop and realize what kind of love does an alcoholic have for alcohol? Most times, they use it to cope. Use it to make all their problems go away, even if they know it's hurting them. Basically, they're addicted to it. So, he's addicted to her. "I love you like a statuette" a statuette is a small figurine that is usually made of marble or bronze. So, she thinks even though he may be something worthless on the outside, he's a prized possession to her. However, things that are small are usually easy to break. Therefore, she knows he'll break soon. She just doesn't want to leave him. "I need you like I need a broken leg" also "I need you like I need a gaping head wound" implies that he doesn't really need her, and he knows it, but he's so obsessed with her that he doesn't care.
"I love you like a broken pot" broken pots are, broken. But most of the times, you've had that pot for so long. So, you keep using it and damaging that pot because you're obsessed with it and don't want to throw it away. Which is basically what he's doing to her. "I love you like a pack of dogs" everybody (well almost everybody) loves dogs, right? But notices how she says "pack" instead of one dog. Most packs of dogs live on the streets. They're often depicted as gangs in cartoons and such, but they're still dogs. So people still love them, even though they're dangerous. That's how she feels about him.
"I love you like a négligée" now this one was hard, but a négligée is a thin, see-through women's night gown. That doesn't sound like it has much value. Which implies that she doesn't have any value, or faith in him anymore. But people still wear négligées, so she doesn't know how to get rid of him and doesn't want to get rid of him.
Finally, the repeated line of "One last kiss" means that they were going to break up, or already thing break up, but kept coming back to eachother.

TL;DR: Toxic relationship doesn't know how to break up.

Some people literally cannot tell that this song isn’t a love song. People can interpret songs differently 😭

This song makes me think of a toxic relationship where they don’t really love each other anymore but they’re scared to let go of each other so they stay in the relationship in an obsessive way, trying to glue the relationship together but making it more toxic

How can people be hearing “I need you like I need a broken leg” and still think that this is a love song

Now I can sing this because I would sing this about my toxic relationship

To me this song represents jealousy and obsessive love. The image i see in my mind when listening to this song is the love interest (whoever it may be) is tied up

But that's just at surface level. Listening to the lyrics and taking them in shows a new part of this song. It represents to me coming to the fact that you don't actually like someone and it was just either a platonic love or finding you dont love someone once you start dating them. Or maybe even bringing that obsessive love back in, realizing the love was not real and just idolization.

I keep on watching this on repeat. To the fact so much I can now keep up on how fast they sing without a breath.

I was in a really toxic and borderline emotionally abusive relationship like this for two years from when I was seventeen to nineteen. Luckily we both stopped, we’re out of it now and we’ve moved on.

Josh I hope you’re doing well. You’ve hurt me and I’ve hurt you. Hopefully you’re doing as well as I am now and will find a girl who brings out the best in you as I only brought out the worst and hopefully I’ll find a guy who will make me smile more than he makes me cry.

I loved you like an alcoholic and now hopefully we’re both growing up and will do better.

In my head this is an enemies to lovers song, but it’s about enemies that are about to kill each other and are instead like ‘I love you but I hate you so much more’

For me, this sounds like one person thinks it's a healthy, happy relationship, while the other thinks that they are in control of the other, but neither are correct, it's just a toxic relationship that disguises itself as a cute little 'oh he may look insane but he's a nice guy' type of relationship. I can also oddly enough see this as Stockholm syndrome where a stalker took their victim out of blind rage, and has kept them there for months on months with both slowly thinking that it's totally normal.
