I'm currently reading the original New York Trilogy after having read an advance copy of the new comics adaptation of all three novellas. In a nutshell, I believe it comes down to engaging with a work on its own terms. Great fiction will work its magic on you, no doubt. A really great comics adaptation will not attempt to compete with the source material but bring in something new, something that only the comics medium can offer.

i gave this a read without having picked up anything else by Auster first. i'll confess that after i finished it, i went to the wikipedia article to familiarize myself with the anti-noir structure of it, and that the knowledge certainly enhanced my understanding of the material. that said, i think it holds up on its own without the full context. the art is good. the non-traditional story structure is apparent for what it is. having access to the source material does unlock a deeper understanding, but i found it to be a good introduction on its own.

Talking about adaptations and talking about Lovecraft, there is a manga adaptation of some Lovecraft stories by Gou Tanabe that just today received an Eisner nomination. I haven't read it, so I can't say if it's good or not, but maybe it's worth checking out.
