Former Northeastern baseball player and current Major Leaguer Carlos Pena returned to Friedman Diamond on May 21 to help honor former teammate Greg Montalbano.
GoNU.TV spent time talking with Pena in this exclusive interview.
Pena and fellow teammates returned to Northeastern for a special number-retirement ceremony for Montalbano, who lost a courageous battle with cancer in 2009. [You can read more about the special Montalbano ceremony here.]
Pena, who was in Boston for the Chicago Cubs' first visit to Fenway Park since 1918, said of his return to Friedman Diamond: "This is really special, just to be here with my old teammates. ...This is really a treat for me just to come down and see this place."
Reminiscing about his time on Huntington Avenue, the former Husky slugger said "I love the city. I love our campus. And just the time that I spent with my friends here...how could I ever forget?"
Pena also took time to talk about his special relationship with Montalbano, describing the former pitcher who went on to earn the Red Sox' Minor League Pitcher of the Year award as "a great teammate, a great friend, and like a brother to me."
The Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation honored Pena during his recent return to the Bay State. The Haverhill native was a member of the 2011 class to be inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame.
Saturday also was the Huskies' final game of the 2011 campaign. Northeastern finished the season at 18-33 (12-18 CAA). The game also was the final home athletics event for any Northeastern team until the fall season begins in earnest in August.
