[UPDATED 2023] How to FIX Disk Read Error (Steam)

In today's tutorial I am going to show you how to fix disk read error in 7 simple ways.

Hey guys,
so sometimes when downloading a Steam game you encounter Disk read error which appears
during or after you have downaloaded a game.
In order to fix Disk read error, we are going to introduce 3 fixes. First we are going to
set Steam to be run with administrator priviliges. So let's search for Steam in Windows
menu. Then, right click on Steam app and select Open file location. Right click on
Steam shortcut and select Compatibility tab. Then select to run this app as administrator.

The second fix we are going to put forward is by opening Steam and going to Settings,
then we are going to click Downloads and go to the bottom of the window and click
Clear download cache.

The third fix and final fix is to go to Steam, Settings again and select Storage, then
select the disk where you have the game with which you are having an disk read error issue
and click on the 3 dots in the top right corner and Repair library folder.
That usually fixes your issue entirely. If this did not help you whatsoever, uninstalling
Steam and reinstalling might help and is usually the case if the 3rd fix does not work.

At this point we are going to go for more advanced fixes.
1) We are going to check for Windows updates and update it accordingly. This is because
Steam is usually only compatible with the newest version of the Windows. Search for windows
updates in Windows menu and open Check for updates and update if you don't have the latest
version of your Steam edition, either Windows 10 or 11.

2) Secondly, we are going to press Windows key + R and type in %ProgramFiles(x86)%,
click OK, and we are going to try find our Steam folder. If you don't find Steam folder here
it's most likely because you have it ProgramFiles so just change that when you search.
Then once we found Steam, go to steamapps and then finally click common. In here there could
be 0 KB file, which is pretty dangerous and should be deleted if spotted. First check
the general directory of all games to find it and then click the folder of the game you got
the error from and see if you find it there. 1 KB is not the same as 0 KB so you shouldn't
delete any other file.

3) Delete corrupted log file
Type Windows key + R and type in %ProgramFiles(x86)%, click on Steam and then find logs,
then look for content_log file and scroll through the list. Your error should appear here
especially if you have gotten this error a couple of minutes ago. If there is any path next
to it, then insert it the path bar without the last part (because that is a file itself)
and delete it. Only delete it if it's not some .exe file that is used to run the game.
Afterwards you are going to have to uninstall the game completely and reinstall back so you
get the original files again.

4) Verifying integrity of game files
We can open Steam desktop app and go to Library and find the game that we are having the
issue with, right click on the game and go to Local files and click on Verify integrity
of game files. This process usually takes a while, it replaces all broken files with
factory new ones and should be a final straw to fixing your issue.

5) Complete read-only override
Open your command prompt and write "diskpart". This opens disk partitioning management
system, type "list disk" to list all hard drives that you have. At this point you need to
know on which disk your game is located and figure the disk by its size, for me the one
with nearly 1 TB of storage is D disk and the other one is C disk. Since I keep my games
on my D disk, this is the disk I will go for. I will write "select disk 1" (the second one)
and finally execute command "attributes disk clear readonly", this will give all apps not
only Steam write access which can be dangerous but last but not least it's a final resort.

i followed every step but the same thing always happens, it starts verifying the game then stops at the end and says disk read error, this never used to happen to me before 2 days ago when i factory reset my pc along with every file, i downloaded steam as normal then i went to go download Skyrim, it worked until it got to the verify part of the download then is just stopped and said disk read error. i tried reinstalling steam and stuff but it wouldn't work.

nothing helped me no matter what i do i follow everything step by step and it doesn't work it starts verifying and when it gets to 99% it says "disk read error" it just doesn't work for me

Compatibility mode no longer works, steam notifies you when starting that it's not ok to run in compatibility mode, I hit continue anyway and the freaking thing freezes....
damn... fuck them and their GTA V game. I can play it from the downloads folder, but I wanted it on steam FFS.
