Week 12: BRS 360 - It Took 20 Years To Learn These Four lessons | 52SE Reef Tank #8

It's time to share the inspiration for the 52SE reef tank number eight. I've stumbled at times, and some deeds could have been done better, but the 360 is a reminder that there is no effort without error or shortcoming. Also, a reminder that finding the great enthusiasms, devotions, and the triumph of high achievement requires us to dare greatly together.

Well done!
And I don't mean how well you turned that tank around. Well done to how you handled personal failure, in public, and used it to redefine how you approached the problem.
Better yet, well done in how you've attempted to bring the rest of us with you. In challenging the hobby to consider the biology of the animal, rather than accepting repeated failures and simply wonder why.

And yes, antibiotics are a tool. And should be approached as such. I hope you explore the topic as one of the few professional Marine Aquarium companies with the resources to do it justice.
But, much like driving a car or handling a fire arm; these are tools best approached with a measured hand and instruction from those with previous experience.
I very much hope you continue to focus on biology when exploring antibiotics and antiseptics. I hope you enlist the aid of biologists and researchers much like you did in understanding photo-pigments.

I am so grateful to you guys for sharing the wealth of knowledge with people like this. Ive no doubt that 52se will go down in history as an encyclopedia of reefkeeping as did 52wor 1. Every time i think i have a good understanding of what I'm up to, i am humbled by new information and eurekas of my own that constantly make me question my methods. And i think that's important in every capacity. I hope through the series i can continue to grow as a reef keeper and continue to learn from my peers so my efforts and time are rewarded.

Surely the most eloquent and intelligent reef 'advice' out there. Stellar work, sir. Happy New Year.

Thanks for the honesty Ryan, it just goes to show we are always learning and that despite being familiar with these closed system environments we need to give careful and considerate thought to what were doing. Finally, the 360 is looking great and one day will be an epic reef tank. Reef on brother!

I've been dealing with tank uglies/algae/slime for months after upgrading to a 40B. Glad to see you overcome so much on a larger tank. Learning a lot by watching various brs playlists. Look forward to the release of new episodes of 52SE each week. Congrats on sorting out the 360!

I've had a 180 gallon up and running for 4 years and experienced a few small scale failures and learned a lot on my way to what I consider a very successful mixed reef tank. I have recently moved and have upgraded to a 330 gal (400gal total volume). I am intrigued by the 360 and the challenges you've had with it. I am looking forward to learning with and from you as I get my setup running and hopefully thriving.

I’m a new reefer. My first tank was during the OG 52 weeks last episodes. Watched them all. Watched the Ryan and Randy Investigates, the Matthew series and Thomas product reviews. Needed all of them; and rewatched many as science/chemistry/biology is not my thing. My AIO nano mixed reef struggled but brought joy because of Ryan which led to me believing I could do this. If it wasn’t for a major move during Covid, I would have kept that tank.

Fast forward to today, I saved my money and went big with a 75 gallon DT with a sump. Because of this new 52 weeks, I added TBS sand like Ryan did and rubble in the sump. Added biome, I.e, , Galaxy pods. Put in a UV sterilizer. All due to Ryan’s methodical videos AND repeating the important stuff. This is not boring; mixed in are his personal experiences which again gives us new reefers confidence. It was important for me to hear what they repeated in the different tanks. Remember, this is a very difficult hobby; especially if you chose to do a mixed reef that has not only beginner, but intermediate corals and fish. I look forward to the entire series and yes, this is season 1 💕

This is the most inspiring video I've seen in a long while! Great perspective.

I've got to emulate with far less expense however!
