The bridge was built to facilitate ship traffic and cars, bikes and pedestrians but ship travel takes priority over the other uses. That is why whenever a ship/vessel that is too high to go under the bridge asks permission to go through, all traffic is stopped to allow that happen. Tourists from around the world have been witnessing the opening of the two huge bascules each time and some pay to go up the sky high passageways to see traffic from above
