I watched something similar when I was a kid. The Engineer was able to get the Locomotive back onto the rails. But it caused damage to the locomotive and it sat on a siding for two months before they were able to pull it out. I believe they took it to the yard in El Paso, Texas. Another time, an empty hopper derailed and a crew used a front end loader to get it back onto the track. Growing up in a small town had its perks. :)

This, I think, is the best visual demonstration of just how much of a locomotive's immense weight is concentrated on a few small contact points at the bottom of the wheels. This is a good thing when pulling a train, as steel on steel would not have much traction unless a large amount of pressure was concentrated on a small surface area. However, this can be a terrible thing when trying to rerail a locomotive, as everything depends on a very small, very heavy wheel doing exactly what we want.

When you think about how much weight is supported by rails affixed with metal clips and spikes on ties, its a wonder anybody goes anywhere at all.

A perfect recommendation for us Mechanical Engineers.

everyone knows you just have to drive back over the switch, works every time

See you when everyone gets this recommended 😆😆

I love how every mechanical system sounds so badass.

I had a mini heart attack when wheel made a snapping sound while derailing

“This has caused confusion and delay.”

How my brain works:
Successfully rerailing a locomotive = good
Failing to re-rail a locomotive = satisfying

First I thought rerail would be satisfying..
but this....

It's even better.. can't complain.

Just an incredible amount of weight and force

That re-rail gadget is crap to what we had in the QR here in Australia.
That is to smell and should be longer and better shaped.

In my 45 years of railfanning and interest in trains, I have never seen a failed rerail until now. I saw the GP38's one axle on the rail joint and knew it was going on -the -ground, but I never anticipated the rerail would fail and both axles and the entire truck would be on -the -ground. Wow, the attempt to rerail anything is a bitch alone, but this is even worse!!!

It looks like the lipped edge of the wheel slipped inbetween the chock or didn't completely make it over. Probably needed to sit just a bit higher to make it over the track. Its scary when something that weighs that much comes off lol.

But isn't it obvious that without special guides, this device is not suitable for re-railing

...very good!!! So it broke ties too LOL

Why wasn't it placed closer at the beginning?
Then it wouldn't have fallen completely off at all
