I think Chelsea did well to contain him.. putting 9 players in front of him for almost 90 min is some work..

Don’t ask him, he was the one that got beaten to a header by a player a foot shorter than him in the 2009 final

Rio Ferdinand : How to stop Messi just let him score and being the champions. And Messi would stop by himself. I did it in 2009 🤣

Poor Ferdinand..he didn't want to tell Messi was the greatest player because..in 2009/2011 he was destroyed and humiliated by Messi 😂😂😂

My plan to stop Messi :
- stop him getting ball at any cost. Mark all the other players on his team like they're Messi.
- if he gets the ball, which is most likely anyway, don't mark him with the defenders. Mark him with forward players. Leave your main defenders free.
Most importantly, mark his potential forward pass options with your main defenders.
- This will leave Messi with only two options : either run himself or pass backwards.
- When he runs himself to score, get your defenders to not run or mark him but form a formidable narrow defensive structure without fear of being penetrated by Messi. Also, the forwards will now shift from marking Messi to his potential pass options in the box.

The best way is to not let him have the ball, it's why Barca struggle against Bayern, efficient, possession team. Well said Sir Rio!

In the current Barcelona side, cut off the space and force him to drop deeper searching for the ball. Once that happens, it's difficult even for the GOAT to start dribbling through 11 men. Barcelona play such a narrow minded one paced way that it's difficult for them to break down the opposition, they don't have Modric, Kroos, Isco etc who can break the line and get it into Messi's feet to cause the damage. Sadly the only two players on his wavelength for Barcelona (and Argentina) are Busquets and Iniesta, everyone in the Argentina team just looks a mile off his talent, including Aguero who has been godly in the Premiership over the last four or five seasons.

Took a mistake to get his first goal against Chelsea, over 730 minutes without a goal, just do what Chelsea do (usually) get an incredibly good defensive player to study his actions, movements and traits and stick to him like glue..
