This study presents an innovative approach for the integrated monitoring, optimization, and control of the combined ozonation (O3) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption process to effectively remove organic micropollutants (µP) from secondary effluent. By utilizing spectral surrogates (UVA254 and EEM-PARAFAC components), the research systematically examines the removal of six µPs with varying ozone reactivity, both in stand-alone O3 and PAC systems and in a combined O3-PAC configuration. Experiments included both sequential and integrated systems, assessing µP spiked into ozonated effluent and untreated secondary effluent, respectively. The objective was to achieve an 80% atrazine removal, in line with Swiss standards, optimizing O3 and PAC doses. A cost-effective ozone dose (0.45 to 0.65 mg O3/mg DOC) was identified to enhance PAC adsorption, particularly at lower PAC doses (1-2 mg PAC/mg DOC).
