One of my favourite Who songs, from one of their most underrated albums.

I remember me broova & me watchin` this all thru` a saturday night in `81 on the 1st programme of (West) German TV...the only thing either of us knew at the time was that this band, THE WHO, were the 3rd GREATEST ROCK BAND EVER after the Beatles (1.) and the Stones (2.).
We went to bed around a half past 5 a.m. ... got up around 9...and went to *church* at 10 o`clock - as was usual for youngsters of our age (13) back in the day !

This song would lend itself well to a pop-punk cover

Not putting anything down, just asking. I love the Who, Pete is my absolute favorite guitarist. But what was done to this audio in post, does anyone know? I mean, I have accepted that most live recordings aren't all truly "live." Even the Who's famous Live At Leeds is apparently full of splices and overdubs. But this sounds like as soon as the music starts it cuts to a prerecorded track. I don't mean just the synth thing that is a huge part of the song. Duh, there's a prerecorded synth track; I get that. But it sounds like everything but the vocals were either highly enhanced later or...I don't know. The crowd sound drops out, switches to sounding like a studio recording. Roger is really singing, that's obvious. No one is THAT good of a lip-syncer. Maybe it is just recorded from the board or something? I don't know. I'm mainly an acoustic player, just really starting to learn about the equipment side of things. But this is clearly not the sound the people in the crowd heard that night. It's obvious. I know a lot of performances do that, maybe just not as clumsily as this? It's just odd. Soon as the song starts, the audio cuts to what sounds to me like a studio recording.
Edit: okay on 2nd viewing, I'm not even sure now if the vocals are live. Those backup vocals? Come on. I think maybe this IS what the crowd heard, there was just some pretty heavy use of prerecorded tracks at the time. I don't know. I still love the Who, but this is kind of corny. But it was the 80s, people did stuff like this. It's a bit like watching someone mime their own song on Solid Gold or something. Personally, I'd have preferred they just play it live, warts and all. That's rock and roll.
