In 1796, George Washington announced he would not run for re-election and the first competive election came into play.
Alexander Hamilton preferred Vice president John Adams not be the president and tried to influence it so he wouldn't be his partys main candidate.
Unfortunately it didn't work and Adams became the 2nd president of the United states.
When he found out about it, his response was, "these events have not changed my additude towards Hamilton and I'll continue to keep him in the same position i always have--at a distance"
