Cities play important role in economic activities and the development of human society.
Until recently, there was no harmonized definition of ‘a city’ for Germany and other countries as well. This undermined the comparability, and thus also the credibility, of cross-country analysis of cities. To resolve this problem, in this video, the term "city" is defined by the Department of Economic and Social Affairs under United Nations as the urban agglomeration. As defined by the German Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development, a Großstadt (large city) is a city with more than 100,000 inhabitants. As of December 31, 2015, 79 cities in Germany fulfilled this criterion. This list refers only to the population of individual municipalities within their defined limits, which does not include other municipalities or suburban areas within urban agglomerations or metropolitan areas.
Urban areas are the home of over 77% of inhabitants in #Germany. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, and Frankfurt are the largest cities in the country. #TOP10Channel presents the video of #LargestCities in Germany (1950 - 2035) based on the most recent report on global urbanization released by the UN population division in 2018.
