Tallinn, Estonia surprised us. With it's incredibly well preserved old town, towering monuments and kind people, we left Estonia with no doubt in our mind that we'll be back again.

I wasn't surprised at all that you were so fascinated in Tallinn :)
I found information about those monk statues. They are quite new, set up in 2015 after an idea contest. They are waiting monk Ambrosius, praying monk Bartholomeus and watching monk Claudius. They are based on old legends that they're sometimes appearing as ghosts in that place and nearby.

all right, things you should do while in Estonia:
Around Tallinn:
1) Visit Estonian Open Air Museum in Rocca al Mare district
2) Pirita to go up the Tallinn TV Tower and while there check out the Sailing venue from the 1980 Olympics
3) Laulupidu / Tallinn Song Festival grounds and shell.... Estonia sang their way to freedom from Soviet occupation
4) Kadriorg Park
5) Warm up at Kehrwieder Saiakang Chocolaterie right on Old Town Hall Square for warm drinks and delicious baked treats
6) Oleviste kirik / St. Olaf's Church climb the tower to the base of the copper roof. This building was the tallest building in the entire world for a period of time after it was built!

So you forgot the Danes. Denmark even gave the name to the city Tallinn. Linn means town, and Taani are the danes. Danish town, Taani linn and shortened Tallinn. The upper part of Tallinn (Toompea) is where the danes lived, the ruling class.

Tere from the Estonian diaspora in America. My grandmother always told me the flag colors represented sky, black rich earth for farming, and the snow or rough-sea for the white stripe dependent on the day. Kinda like early naturalist movement shown in national iconography. "You can't be a happy Estonian unless you cannot see your neighbor's house, " = solitude with nature and land is considered important. Maybe that's why I'm a farmer on a 12 acre mountaintop and away from people, but back to flags... the stripey blue/white flag next to the national flag in nearly every picture is the CITY's flag, and thereby worth a shoutout as you trip through European cities: they're not just pretty colors for no reason. Glad no Russians or Swedes raped, murdered, and placed you in forced labor gulags during your trip :)

I'm surprised you're knowing some phrases in Estonian. It's a very hard language to learn, especially for English speakers. This is because, Estonian is part of the Uralic language along with Hungarian and Finnish.

Estonian flag more common colour meanings are: blue - the sky, black - the forsts and white - the snow.

Estonians absolutely hate that Russian church as it was built as a symbol of Russian imperialism. Many of us still wish it demolished. Same with the Russian matryoshka dolls - they are NOT part of the Estonian culture. I think you guys did much injustice to Estonia in this video.

The monks were installed in 2015 and there isn't really any story behind them, they are just sculptures.
