The vast majority of people who’ve lost a limb can still feel it — not as a memory or vague shape, but in complete lifelike detail. They can flex their phantom fingers and sometimes even feel the chafe of a watch band or the throb of an ingrown toenail. What causes these phantom limb sensations? Joshua W. Pate explains how the brain reacts to a missing limb.

I was born without fingers on my left hand, but I can still feel it as if it was the same as my right hand. I’ve never really told anyone or thought all that much of it though because I don’t remember a time I didn’t feel fingers I don’t have and I’ve always thought of phantom limbs as being exclusively for people who lost their limbs later in life. That’s kinda cool to know what it is and why it happens!! 😊

I don't know anyone that suffers with phantom limb nor can I imagine what it's like. I'm not even a doctor. But I find the subject truly fascinating and my deepest sympathies go to those who do suffer from it, and this video is just a visually and coherently awesome informational video. Well done TED.
