ANORTHOSIS FAMAGUSTA - MORE THAN A CLUB

Anorthosis was established in Famagusta on 30 January 1911. At that time, the island of Cyprus was under the dominion of the British Empire. Anorthosis Famagusta was established by Greek Cypriots, who were asking for liberation and union with the motherland Greece. The name of the club was inspired by the phrase 'the rise up of the nation' (rise up in greek is the word Anorthosis). The main purpose of the club was the education of its members. A lot of its members fight by the side of Greece in Balkan Wars and World Wars and in the liberation struggle of Cyprus against the British Empire. Anorthosis was highly involved to the point that the British colonists blew up and demolished the club’s main building on the 8th of July 1958, after some violent riots. In 1974 Turkey occupied illegally 37% of the island, the city of Famagusta came under Turkish control and Anorthosis lost her home...
